Campground Staff Couples Wanted - Summer 2018 - Squamish, BC
WHY DO WE SHOW EXPIRED LISTINGS?
What type of individuals are we looking for?
Do you take pride and satisfaction in doing your best at no matter what you do? Do you enjoy bringing a smile to others when you are of service to them? Are cleaning toilets not a big deal to you? Are you energetic and prefer to be on the move rather than to sit watching time pass? Do you want to experience living, working and playing in an outdoor paradise? If you answered yes (be honest with yourself) to these questions then we’re looking for you, otherwise you need not apply. If you're the type who needs someone telling them what to do next, you're probably not well suited to this type of job as self-initiative is an essential trait being sought. Those looking for somewhere to “park their RV” need not apply, this is a job posting. You need to be Jacks and Jills of all trades, handy at typical household type4chores, types of repair and maintenance tasks. You also bring a strong work ethic and a sense of responsibility in committing to be part of a team of several couples who enjoy being outdoors and helping others pursue a memorable camping experience.
What type of job is it? Where is it?
This is not a “host” job. This is a near full time position for 4 months, May 1st through to the Labour Day weekend with the potential to extend to the Thanksgiving weekend. Camping experience is essential and prior experience working in a campground is much preferred. We’re looking for physically fit couples to work in an 80+ site rustic campground in beautiful Squamish, BC, also known as the Outdoor Recreation Capital of Canada. If you enjoy biking, hiking, climbing, kayaking, canoeing, photography, white water rafting, among other outdoor pursuits then Squamish is where you want to be. The campground is consistently rated at 4.5/5 stars on Google and TripAdvisor and is a family oriented campground with a non-amplified music policy. You need to be able to legally work in Canada. We are 45 minutes south of Whistler and 50 minutes north of Vancouver. It is not uncommon to observe bear, cougar, and coyote in the vicinity or on-site at times during the season so, be sure that you have a comfort level with wildlife contact.
What does the position entail?
There are three aspects to the running a campground; maintenance, guest services, and policy adherence. As a couple, one will be focused on guest services working in the office / store where duties include guest registration and reservations using a web-based system on a Windows 10 computer. Answering in-person and phone inquiries about the campground and recreational activities in the area. The store has an ice cream bar, beverage / snacks and camping supplies for which you will use an IOS point-of-sale app. You will handle both cash and credit card transactions and conduct an end-of-day reconciliation. You will be expected to multi-task in this busy environment all the while being welcoming and genuine in your guest interactions. When time permits, light housekeeping duties will be required to provide a welcoming and sanitary environment. The other individual will be primarily assigned to maintenance duties. This is a physically demanding position requiring walking, overhead lifting, carrying weights up to 40 lbs, reaching high / low, pulling / pushing, and climbing ladders. You can expect to rake, sweep, paint, wash, cut grass and trim branches, repair broken items, lift / carry supplies, move picnic tables and fire pits, collecting and sorting recycling, among other activities. You can expect to clean toilets, showers, sinks and mirrors, wash floors, pick up trash and recycling, rake sites, and empty fire pits. Some of these tasks are done several times per shift. You can expect to carry bundles of firewood, and during a fire ban lifting and carrying 20 lb propane tanks and gas fire pits. Should the need arise, you may have to direct incoming campers in their vehicles / trailers to assist office staff on Fridays of long weekends.
The policy adherence aspect of the position will require night patrols after the 10 PM quiet hour to ensure guests are being respectful to their neighbours. Either individual or both can do this walking patrol which is typically 30-45 minutes in length or until confident that campers will not be disruptive. During high season such patrols are nightly however, during low season the patrols are typically required only on Friday and Saturday nights. The other policy adherence aspects are being vigilant to ensuring guests are not damaging property or the natural environment. This is a shared responsibility of all campground staff.
There are two “seasons” to a campground, low and high. Low season is May 1st to June 15th then Labour Day to Thanksgiving Day at which time maintenance is the priority in order to either prepare for high season occupancy or to prepare for campground closure. High season is when children begin summer break and serving our guests during full occupancy is the priority. Maintenance projects are only those essential to the guest experience such as landscaping and repairing property.
Any other job requirements?
You must have your own self-contained RV unit, no longer than 34 feet. The ability to drive a standard shift vehicle is an asset. All employees must hold a valid driver’s license from your home jurisdiction. A uniform shirt / jacket is provided and you will be required to have appropriate footwear and pants / shorts, work gloves and flashlight. Each couple should have their own cell phone / smartphone.
How many hours does this entail? How much does it pay?
A full-serviced (30A electricity, water and sewer) site is provided in exchange for 30 hours of work per couple per week. Additional hours are paid at a rate of $15.00 - $ 18.00 hourly per person up to a maximum of 40 hours per week in total per person. A provincially mandated 6% vacation pay is included in this hourly rate. Typical weekly hours will be 30-36 per person during high season. Couples will work similar hours and will be provided the same two days off each week. The campground’s office / store hours are 9 AM to 9 PM during high season and low season hours are 9 AM to 8 PM Sunday to Thursday and 9 AM to 9 PM Fridays and Saturdays. Flexibility in the shift schedule to accommodate personal needs are considered on an individual basis. Laundry facilities for staff only are available on site.
Can I bring my pet?
Yes, we’re a dog friendly campground however, they must be leashed and not barkers.
