The Direct Child Care Workers (i.e. Houseparent) are the “front line” people of our organization. They have the general responsibility of nurturing the children in their cottage in a manner very similar to that in which they would nurture their own natural children. It is obvious that each Direct Child Care Worker /Houseparent will have a vested interest in every aspect of the lives of each child in their cottage and would be expected to have a certain degree of responsibility with regard to every phase of those children’s lives at Georgia Sheriffs’ Youth Homes.
- Observe all state license policies and procedures as well as Georgia Sheriffs’ Youth Homes (GSYH) rules, guidelines, policies and procedure established during your employment.
- Fulfill the role of mentor by providing understanding and care to children, listening to their problems, and providing guidance to them.
- Administer medication as prescribed by doctor and document.
- Children must be supervised at all times. Safety and supervision of the youth in your care is of the upmost importance.
- Assist in keeping costs down on consumption and use of food, supplies and gas.
- Establish a cottage routine.
- Supervise and check daily household and bedroom chores. Inspect cottage daily or as needed.
- Prepare three well balanced meals daily for the children.
- Maintain a neat and tidy environment at all times (inside and outside the cottage).
- Ensure campus, buildings and cottages are neat, clean, and desirable for guest and visitors.
- Observe each child for deficiencies in personal hygiene and take measure to correct those deficiencies.
- See that children bathe, brush teeth, shampoo hair and apply deodorant daily. You must assist and instruct as needed.
- See that children are appropriately dressed for each day’s activities.
- Teach children appropriate etiquette and manners in the presence of adults, guest, and visitors as well as with each other.
- Teach children proper table manners. Encourage and enforce their use.
- Be a positive role model for residents.
- Maintain an open line of communication with each child.
- Maintain an awareness of each child’s emotional status by observing their moods, relationships to peers, contacts with family, and behavior at school, etc.
- Assist in planning and providing acceptable social activities for children.
- Be responsible for the direct supervision of children and the facility in a manner which creates a family-oriented environment.
- Perform tasks and duties as assigned by Resident Director (RD) or appointee.
- Assist as instructed by RD in campus activities, fund raising and events set up and clean up.
- Perform any other duties either directly or indirectly related to the child care operation and management as assigned by the RD or appointee.
- Attend and complete training requirements for this position and apply what has been learned to the workplace.
- Must have a high school diploma or GED.
- Must complete drug screen, criminal record check (local check provide by applicants), and finger print check (must be completed in GA).
- Must possess a valid drivers license
- Must be at 25 years of age
