Stars for Life Foundation for Autism
The Stars for Life Foundation for Autism is a Not For Profit Registered Charity, providing "Life Long Living and Learning Opportunities" to young adults and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Asperger's (ASD) Syndrome, in the province of Prince Edward Island, through continued education, housing, and social inclusion in their communities.
At the Foundation we provide individualized support for three live in individuals in the Stars for Life Supported Living Home, addressing social issues and other challenges. Examples include independent living skills, community intregration and social interaction with peers. The Foundation provides individualized day service programs for those with ASD in the community over the age of 18, addressing their specific needs and challenges. Examples include: enjoying physical fitness, peer groups, and one-to-one support where required. All of our clients are engaged in activities such as workplace skills training, communication development, and independent living skills in an autism-friendly environment. We assist with continuing education - GED Accreditation, College/University course load organization with tutoring as needed, and goal planning/achievement though hiring and training one-on-one educational assistants in autism-specific practices to assist each of our clients in their personal goals.
The title "House Parents" refers to a service professional, who would live and work within our home
(one bedroom apartment provided), and who is responsible for day to day living, including cooking nutritional meals, monitoring of medication, help organizing outings, and supervising the operation of the home. Reporting to the Adult Autism Manager and/or Director of Services, House Parents play an essential role to our organization, as they represent the core of our "Family Unit" Model of care. Such a model would enable one of the parents to be employed outside of the home.
