Missaukee County Parks is looking for vacationers with a "can-do" attitude for the 2023 camping season. The working season starts May 15th and will run through October 1st. Applicants interested in staying the full season are preferred, but we are willing to work with otherwise qualified individuals with availability for shorter periods of time.
Title: Campground Host (Casual)
Department: Missaukee County Parks
Purpose:
This is a position that is intended to serve and assist both park staff and park guests, ideally, to preemptively address issues before they arise. This is a fluid position, moving around the park as needed rather than being placed in one static location (ie: office). The Campground Host is responsible for greeting and assisting campground visitors, answering questions, explaining park rules, serving as a liaison, and working in all weather conditions. In addition, the Campground Host will provide light maintenance work to assist maintenance staff in completing their duties. The Campground Host provides no supervision of others and reports to the Park Director & Assistant Manager.
Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:
Any employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all the following essential functions. These examples do not include all the duties which the employee may be expected to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
Liaison:
- Greets and assists visitors, answers questions, explains park rules, distributes information as needed.
- Provides campers with directions to their campsites.
- Provides information regarding the area and local points of interest. Acts as a tour guide.
- Assists in campground public relations, educational activities, and special events.
- Reports any park disturbances to Park Director & Assistant Manager.
Facilities/Groundskeeping
- Collects trash and refuse from County Park property.
- Performs janitorial tasks as needed.
- Sweeps, mops, and vacuums floors, and washes windows of park facilities.
- Helps clean and prepare rental units and cabins as needed.
- Cleans automobiles, trailers, and other motor vehicles as needed.
- Stocks shelves, moves supplies, fills orders, and maintains stock.
- Assists Park Director, Assistant Manager, and Sheriff’s Deputy as requested and needed.
The following tasks may also be asked of hosts in rare situations and will be expected to be completed if assigned:
Facilities/Groundskeeping
- May assist with cutting grass, removing weeds, rakes ground, picks up sticks and branches, shovels and sweeps dirt, plants and cares for trees, shrubs, grass, flower beds, and performs related groundskeeping activities.
- May assist in repairs of parks, boat access, trails, and roadsides.
- May shovel snow and sweeps sidewalks, docks, lanes, and driveways as needed.
- May collect and sort laundry, distributes clean linen supplies and changes linen.
- May perform related work as assigned.
Office
- May assist office staff in checking for vehicle entrance permits.
- May assist office staff in selling motor vehicle permits.
- May assist in registering campers.
- May perform routine office duties.
- May deliver messages.
- May sort and deliver mail.
- May perform related work as assigned.
Physical Requirements:
This job requires the ability to perform the essential functions contained in this description. These include, but are not limited to, the following requirements:
- Ability to walk, stand, reach, bend, climb and otherwise fully ambulate in order to operate maintenance equipment and otherwise conduct park maintenance operations.
- Ability to sit in a chair for extended periods; ability to sit on a mower seat for extended periods.
- Ability to work outside and in occasional, inclement weather.
- The job duties require an employee to lift and/or move heavy objects. Ability to lift 25 pounds regularly and occasionally, up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to write, hear, see, read, and speak English. Fluency in other languages is encouraged to apply.
- The job duties require an employee to bend, reach, stoop, stand and/or walk for extended periods.
- The job duties may require an employee to traverse rough terrain.

Working Conditions:
- Works primarily outside in various weather conditions.
- Works on weekends and holidays, shift is scheduled per needs of Park Manager
- Expected to travel throughout campground daily, on foot, or when park equipment is available.
- May be required to occasionally attend meetings outside the normal work schedule with advance notice provided.
Compensation/Benefits:
This is a casual position and is not eligible for benefits or overtime. Vacationing Hosts are required to work a minimum of 20 hours per person and may not exceed 29 hours per week. The working day will most likely be scheduled 4 hours/day, 5 days/week, with extra hours being requested around holidays, festivals and busy weekends. Compensation will be $9.87/hour (or the current state minimum rate) and waved camping fees for length of service as a Host.
Amenities Provided:
Hosts must provide their own camper unit, tents are not allowed. The site provided by the park has 20/30-amp electrical connections along with potable water and a sewage drain.
