FEATURED JOB OPENING: Couple to Manage Rural Alaskan Business with Lodge, Store, and Fuel Operation - Sleetmute, AK

These positions are salaried starting at $45,000-$50,000 per year per person depending on skills and experience. There is a two week paid vacation. Room and board are included in the arrangement. We would like to have a one year contract. Transportation to Sleetmute from Anchorage, AK will be paid and return paid upon completion of the contract.

The business is located in a small community on the Middle Kuskokwim River. It is accessible only by air. Access to neighboring villages is available by snowmachine and boat depending on the season. Sleetmute itself has fewer than 100 people but we also serve nearby villages. Our lodge is not a guided sport hunting or fishing lodge. Most of our clientele are working people coming to our area for some job or project and needing a convenient and comfortable place to stay. We serve three meals and snacks to our guests as part of the lodging fee. Our store is a small, mom and pop type convenience store with a variety of food and non-food items available. We also sell gas and heating fuel as well as propane and aviation fuel. We sell our fuels onsite, deliver locally, and also deliver by air to some customers.

We started this business many years ago as a small, family run operation. It has grown from humble beginnings and has provided us with an excellent living and lifestyle. Our services have become essential to the Upper Middle Kuskokwim Valley. We find that age has made us want to spend more time with our kids and grandkids and to pusue other interests while we are able. For these reasons we are looking for a couple to take over the daily operations of the business. The owner, Henry Hill, will be in and out to facilitate fuel deliveries by airplane. He will also be available  for consulting on any business questions or maintenance issues both by phone and in person as needed.

The daily operation of the business will require that both people work full time performing duties related to the business including managing several part time employees. The daily routine may include running the store, janitorial chores, food preparation for lodge guests, and delivering and transferring fuel.

Equipment operation is critical for maintaining the runway as well as plowing around the lodge. All fuel deliveries and receiving of inventory are done with machinery. Basic knowledge in equipment maintenance, carpentry, electrical, and plumbing are needed as there are no people to call on for these things.

Computer use, basic bookkeeping, inventory and ordering are also critical skills. We also put in a small garden and greenhouse to help with fresh food availability, so any gardening skills are useful as well. Hard work,good health, and good physical shape are a must for these jobs. And honesty and reliability are obviously absolutely necessary.
