THE CAMP
Dakota Ridge Builders is the Prime Contractor responsible for building a wellness retreat and youth summer camp under the TELUS brand. The retreat is in its inaugural year of operations and we are excited about providing a unique and engaging experience that facilitates a respite style environment for healthcare workers that have been impacted by Covid-19 and their guests. Set amongst the West Coast’s natural beauty, the retreat beneficiaries will receive shishalh nation cultural programming, experience relaxing activities and counselling support. The second year of operations, subject to public health recommendations regarding Covid-19, will see the addition of a youth camp providing disadvantaged youth with exposure to first nation culture, nature based activities and technology.
ROLE DEFINITION
This live-in position is suitable for either a single person or a couple, with one person providing kitchen help or cleaning services and the other funcitoning as the Caretaker. The position is presently a Dakota Ridge Builders position, but it is anticipated we will transfer the position to TELUS once the camp is built up and handed over to TELUS. The Caretaker is responsible for maintaining a remote, water access only, oceanfront wilderness camp environment located at Cawley Point in Sechelt Inlet. The Caretaker performs routine maintenance tasks, operating mechanical and other tools and equipment necessary to support the operations of the property.
GENERAL DUTIES
The Caretaker is responsible to:
- Perform routine maintenance tasks on buildings and grounds to keep the property and components in safe, functional and good working order
- Operate and perform maintenance on mechanical and electrical equipment and/or coordinate the repair/replacement of equipment and tools
- Perform routine maintenance using basic trades skills, such as painting, carpentry, and equipment repair
- Deal with urgent situations by arranging for appropriate trade to repair or replace item
- Prepare site for camp programs and events in coordination with the Project Manager
- Create, maintain and implement a property maintenance system providing for a schedule of annual inspections, servicing and replacement
- Assist other staff as required to ensure smooth delivery of programs and services
- Perform other duties asassigned
CERTIFICATION
The Caretaker is required to have current certification in the following proficiencies, or, be willing to take and successfully complete the training within the first year of employment:
- Small Vessel Operators Proficiency Certificate or higher certification
- Restricted Operator’s certificate (Maritime)
- S-100 wildfire management training
- Level3 Occupational FirstAid, with minimum requirement of current Standard First Aid with CPR‘C’certification
- WHIMS
- Fall protection and safe lifting practices
REQUIREMENTS
- Experience operating a boat and outboard motors
- Experience working in an isolated or semi-isolated location
- Experience working in a remote wilderness, marine environment
- Willingness to live in a remote location for extended periods of time
- Experience using email, web browser and productivity software such as Word and Excel
- Ability to safely operate and maintain power tools and equipment including mowers, trimmers, chain saws, carpentry saws, drills, generators, compressors, power washers and leafblowers
- Ability to safely operate and inspect equipment, tractors, all terrain vehicles, and boats
- Able to deliver a clear message in writing and orally
- Ability to interact and co-operate with others in a professional and friendly manner in order to achieve good results
- Find quick and resourceful ways to overcome difficulties and challenges
- Trustworthy and able to perform work in a timely manner
- Use good judgment and possess solid decision-makingskills
- Be organized, have a strong eye for detail, possess analytical skills necessary to find any reason why a boat may not be seaworthy, or any machinery would be dangerous, or to deal with any problems effectively
- Willing to travel using various modes of transportation including small boats
- Valid driver’s license and own dependable vehicle
