Farm Manager – Gambier Island, BC
Reporting to the Gambier Island Sea Ranch (GISR) Council the Farm Manager (team) is central to the smooth functioning of the Sea Ranch, a unique non-industrial, seasonal strata community comprised of 66 cottages on 330 acres of farm and protected land located at the head of Long Bay 35 minutes by boat from Vancouver and Gibsons [GPS location 49.28.935N and 123.20.999W]. The Farm Manager (team) carries out the day-to-day operations including care of livestock, pastures, garden and outbuildings; maintenance of heavy equipment, roads, wharves, community buildings and trails, water & sewer systems and inventory; transportation of goods, and supports purchasing, record keeping, procedure documentation and other related administrative functions encompassed in the running of a farm community. The Manager is responsible for hiring and supervising the relief and summer staff within the established budget as well as coordination of community work parties. The role also collaborates with Council in adherence with Acts and bylaws and acts as the community liaison in achieving the GISR Vision and objectives which strive for an environmentally, economically and socially sustainable farm that enables us to make a small profit.
The perfect team will possess superior communication and coordination skills, willingness to learn, teach and engage the community, have strong farm and public works related mechanical skills and extensive farming experience including poultry, general caretaking knowledge including plumbing, rough carpentry, water and electrical system maintenance, sustainable gardening and the ability to work alone mostly outdoors. Must have the physical ability to perform the duties of the job, be bondable, technically competent (Email, MS Office, on-line learning and research) and current firearms license.
