JOB OPPORTUNITY
This is an invitation to be part of a unique eco-urban demonstration site and living sanctuary. We seek a core teammate to join our small residential management team. You are passionate about local-to-global solutions, action-oriented sustainability practices, and an integrated, whole-human approach…with soul. Our site is a beautiful urban oasis in a prime location. Asheville’s vibrant downtown culture is a short walk, with organic restaurants, cafes, yoga studios and more. We border 60 wooded acres, and are a few minutes drive to big open land and the Blue Ridge Parkway. We look forward to a flourishing year ahead!
We are looking for a: I) live-in Sanctuary Guesthouse Manager who oversees daily house needs, promotes and books optimum occupancy and supports guests, visitors and residents, and II) someone with the skills and interest to actively participate in the Institute’s programs, projects, and organizational development.
ORGANIZATION & SITE DESCRIPTION: ASHEVILLAGE INSTITUTE & SANCTUARY
Ashevillage Institute is a nonprofit dedicated to sustainable solutions in action. It hosts educational programs with the goal of inspiring participants to walk their talk in their own backyards, neighborhoods and communities. 2013 programs include: Urban Farm School, Natural Building School, educational tours, community resilience leadership immersions, and special events. The Institute is headquartered at the Ashevillage Sanctuary LLC, a premier one-acre site that features:
• A residential community, guest house and 24/7 living-learning laboratory
• A neighborhood CSA with beautiful edible landscape and permaculture features
• A 20,000 gallon rain catchment system with five ponds and aquaponic greenhouse
• Naturally renovated houses, earthen cottage, mud art, wood-fired ovens and recycled courtyard
I. ASHEVILLAGE SANCTUARY (LLC): Guesthouse Manager’s Responsibilities & Compensation
Compensation is based on 15 hours per week exchange for a place to live (camping and/or room available), garden goodies, all utilities, as well as laundry facilities, wifi, free street parking, access to a saline pool, hot tub and gym, and a Biltmore Estate member pass (8,000 acres). Responsibilities include:
• Market and manage guesthouse for optimum occupancy
Manage existing promotion on AirBNB and Craigslist
Initiate new avenues for marketing, outreach and research
Schedule bookings and collect payments
• Host and serve as main contact for house guests and visitors to the site
Greet and tend with warm and gracious energy
Provide professional and informed orientation and support
Passion for and competent representation of Ashevillage
• Manage the budget, bookkeeping, deposits and incoming mail
• Coordinate general upkeep, including overseeing house cleaning(s)
• Assess where support is needed and delegate when appropriate
Promote, recruit and oversee interns and/or work-traders
• Collaborate and communicate regularly with Ashevillage Director
II. ASHEVILLAGE INSTITUTE (nonprofit): Responsibilities & Compensation
Roughly 20 hours of responsibilities and leadership opportunities are available. The compensation for this role will be based on either: 1) an exchange for program credit, 2) a monthly stipend, and/or 3) commission. We will have clarity as to what compensation options are available in March/April. Please let us know if you have the background, skills and interest to assist in some of the following:
• Permaculture tour promotions, management and facilitation
• Program development, public relations and implementation
• Cooking, shopping, menu and budget planning for groups
• Fundraising, grant-writing and sponsorship cultivation
• Urban Farm School and/or permaculture assistance
• Natural Building School and/or building/carpentry
• Other valuable skills/talents
QUALIFICATIONS
• Passion for and knowledge of Permaculture, deep ecology, community and conscious living
• Highly organized, can manage multiple tasks, knack for clear decision making
• Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and with a team
• Thrives on self-responsibility, self-initiation and creative problem-solving
• Graceful and grounded at being professionally clear and personably warm
• Background in marketing, public relations, outreach and communications
• Loves being clean & orderly, tending details, has a fine eye for aesthetics
• Great at social interaction and serving others while balancing self care
• Fiscally responsible, ease with money, experience managing a budget
• Adept at identifying needs, coordinating and delegating
• Compassionate listener, enthusiastic, flexible and fun
• Top notch written and oral communication skills
• Non-smoker; occasional drinker okay; local, organic & fresh foodie
• Must be proficient in social media, Microsoft, Google Docs, and have a laptop
COMMITMENT
Start ASAP. The Sanctuary exchange position will be approximately 15 hours per week for at least one year. The Institute position will be 20-25 hours, and will include compensation as outlined above.
